The third day is usually used for acclimatization. Therefore you stay at the Horombo Huts for two nights before continuing. The climb to the Zebra Rocks supports the body’s altitude acclimatization. It takes about an hour of quite a steep climb, with an average gradient of around 15.3% from approx. 3,731 to 4,041 meters in altitude. The climb is worth it: the rock formation really shows a unique zebra pattern and in good weather you enjoy great views. Of course it’s much quicker to go back.

Level of difficulty: Medium – due to the altitude.

Shoes, clothing, equipment: Even when the sun is shining, it stays cool during the day. A light windbreaker and a fleece jacket as a possible second layer are recommended here. You should also take an extra shirt with you so that you don’t get too cold during the break at the Zebra Rocks. In addition to a sun hat, a wool hat and scarf are also advisable, and possibly also light sports gloves. Important: don’t forget sunscreen!
Something to read is recommended for the rest of the day and the evening to pass the time. On the other hand, there may be exciting conversations, because those who have just returned from the summit also spend the night at the Horombo Huts.

Overnight stay at Mandara Huts: Just like before in small triangular huts, each with four beds on thin plastic-covered mattresses. The evenings and nights are getting cold.

Special extra: You spend your acclimatization day at the Horombo Huts. The one-hour climb to the Zebra Rocks is worth it (it’s quicker to go back), firstly to help with acclimatization and secondly because the rocks really have an impressive zebra pattern.
